Why is wine laid down or inversed for storage?

Lying down or inversion of wines is conducive to maintaining wet and inflated cork, thus by which the bottleneck is tightly corked and oxidation is avoided by preventing plenty of air from entering the wine liquid, hence in favor of long-term storage of wines without deterioration.
